Former Victorian mansion in York's Clifton area - YHA York

Accommodation

YHA York offers rooms with bunk beds in a Victorian mansion that was once home to the Rowntree family. The private rooms come in configurations including quadruple rooms with a double bed and bunks, twin rooms, and en-suite options with a shower and toilet. All rooms are heated, and the property provides wheelchair-accessible rooms with lower bathroom sinks and grab rails.

Dining

The on-site restaurant serves breakfast from 07:30 to 09:00 on weekdays and until 10:00 on weekends, with a full cooked option available. Kids aged 10 and under eat for £1 when an adult purchases a meal, and the bar offers a selection of wine and champagne. A self-catering kitchen with three ovens, three hobs, and multiple fridges allows guests to prepare their own food, and there is a coffee house on site.

Facilities

The games room is equipped with a pool table, table football, board games, and books. A large, glass-fronted common room provides seating, and the property has a garden with outdoor furniture and a picnic area. Guest laundry, luggage storage, and bike storage are available, and the hostel operates a 24-hour front desk with vending machines.

Location

YHA York is set in the quiet residential area of Clifton, a 15-minute riverside walk from York Minster and the historic city walls. Betty's Tea Rooms and York's shopping district are a 20-minute walk away, with the Jorvik Viking Centre and York Dungeon 25 minutes on foot. Free parking is available on site, and two bus stops near the hostel offer direct routes into the city centre.

Family-Friendly Features

The hostel offers family rooms with bunk beds and private en-suite bathrooms, plus a quadruple room with a double bed and two bunks. Board games, a pool table, and a table football keep children entertained, and the large garden has picnic tables and outdoor space. Kids eat for £1 in the restaurant, and the self-catering kitchen is equipped with plenty of utensils and cookware for family meals.

“I found the atmosphere here quite convivial, with ample space for groups to gather, whether indoors or out. Its proximity to the river makes for a rather pleasant approach into the city, and the value for money feels quite robust, especially considering the clean, comfortable accommodations and surprisingly good cafe bar.”
